Research Interest 

In my research, I am bridging the gap between microbial organisms and bioinformatics. Even though microorganisms have conquered every single habitat on our planet, we only have a very vague understanding of their diversity and their specific functions in ecosystems. Massive high-throughput sequencing datasets may help to shed more light on these aspects, but much of the information in such datasets remains overlooked. Therefore, I am highly interested in innovative methodological approaches that my be used in different steps of HTS dataset analyses (e. g. clustering approaches, sequence assignment). My own strategies focus on concepts from graph theory for performing network analyses of HTS datasets. The results enable me to draw conclusions about fundamental ecological questions (e. g. dispersal patterns, delimitation of species) as well as about relationships in microbial communities (e. g. species interactions, spatial and temporal co-occurrence of organisms).

Furthermore, I have always been interested in exploring the potential of microorganisms for applied research. For instance, both the identification of microbial indicator species and the biomonitoring of microbial communities are attracting more and more attention for assessing the pollution of ecosystems. Using my knowledge from microbial ecology to set up a framework for these novel fields of application is a very intriguing part of my work.
